The hydraulic design developed by Alpina intends to increase the productivity of electricity, with the integration of a pumping during night time and enhancement of the environment with the elimination of the two existing power plants on the right bank of Doria river and the construction of the new plant completely underground.
A 14 km long offtake tunnel starts from the intake to the storage basin in Val Clarea (630.000 m³ capacity) from which the waters feeds the penstock (1,3 km long and average diameter 3.2 m). The underground cavern power plant is equipped with two vertical-axis Francis turbines and the related generators supply an installed capacity of 150 MW.
These units use a diverted flow of 33 m³/s with a 515 m waterfall for a annual hydroelectric production of 457 GWh per year.
